Doppelgängster are a force, creating uncomfortable theatre experiences. This is no exception. Cold War 2.0 weaves in reflections on the human condition, capitalism, and societal breakdown. The script is unbelievably dense, occasionally rambling, with many ideas that don’t necessarily lead anywhere. But it’s interesting all the same.
The duo are totally committed to the work; you have to give them credit for that. They’ll tell you where you can’t sit, they’ll [probably] make you dance, they might get up very close to you.
The set has a truly dystopian feel, with hand-painted drop sheets and excessive red lighting. The space could easily pass for a bunker (minus the stockpile of tinned food). I guess a pickle-flavoured snow cone will do in a pinch.
This is hugely immersive, aggressive, and loud. If their goal was to deliver something provocative, they’ve done that very well.
Do they want me to recommend it? No idea! Would I recommend it? Well, I don’t need to see it again! But it’s absolutely memorable, quite an experience, so maybe that’s enough to roll the dice.
PS: the divisiveness is a huge part of the charm! Some people will live for the punk vibe, some will find it confronting. But gosh, it gives people something to talk about!!
