26 Jan Top 11 Shows to see at VAULT Festival
From 27 Jan-07 Feb Doppelgangster will be performing ‘BABY’ at Vault Festival, London.
That’s all good and well but what will you see when you’re not seeing BABY? There’s over 120 shows in the six week long festival. There’s workshops, panels, parties, and we’re going to break those down in another post but first let’s look at the shows… What will Doppelgangster be seeing or wishing to see? It always seems so unfair when people release their top ten list of what to see? How could one – or in this case two – possibly boil down all the choices to a list of ten? It will always be subjective and probably change every day on a whim anyway so instead…
Here is Director Generals Manderson-Galvin and Payne’s list of the…

Valkyrie: A Motorway Odyssey
Met the designer for this show by chance waiting for a bus and I am now thoroughly convinced that this show is gonna look amazing. She seemed convinced of the quality of the work too, and you know it looks pretty ****ing cool. – Tobias
Yes, she was waiting for a very specific bus, one with a modern aesthetic. Nothing else would do. Expect to see the same level of dedication and attention to detail in the design of this show. – Tom
Valkyrie by Felix Trench
Locker | 6pm | 3 – 7 Feb | £12
Das Spiel: Are You Part of the Game?
This is one of those shows that’s not a show but a game, and so, ok, it says that in the title but then it sort of doesn’t, but it surely is. Looks slick. – Tobias
So, I saw this one and I was like, “Mastermind circa 1994?” – but then I looked a little closer and I spotted that the piece had a German title. And anything with a German name has got to be good, right? – Tom
Das Spiel: Are You Part of the Game? by Philipp Oberlohr

Fuck that is funny. I keep reading that title and keep finding it funny. – Tobias

SMASHER
Helen Duff is a clown from that – no but wait – from that school that brought us Sacha Baron Cohen and Emma Thompson. So should you have those high / low brow levels of expectations? Yes. – Tobias
I love clowns, almost as much as dead pirates. Not dead clowns mind. Or that one from Stephen King’s IT. Is that a clown? Or just a fantasy monster in makeup? Either way, this show! This show!! – Tom
Smasher by Helen Duff
Pit | 9:15pm | 24 – 28 Feb | £10
THE LOCKER OUTINGS
New! New! New! All that potential!! Each of these new writers is a already making a name for themselves in their own corner.
I’ll be at this every night I possibly can. – Tobias
I’m not really a big fan of plays. Not so into theatre right now either, but they’re new so there’s hope. – Tom
The Locker | 6pm | 27 – 31 Jan | £10
Outings Mega Ticket
Get tickets to all 5 plays for just £25, originally £50.
Skin a Cat
I thought this was a dance work at first. Now I don’t know if I want to see it as much now I’ve read the blurb. No, but that is a great series of images they have, so I’m in. – Tobias
This one is on at the same time as us. Otherwise I’d go every night. You shouldn’t. Come and see us at least once. – Tom
Skin a Cat by Isley Lynn
Cavern | 9pm | 27 – 31 Jan | £10

THE BANE TRILOGY
This trilogy of shows has been selling out for about half a decade. If you havent seen it, it’s one guy and a live musician and a comic book style tale and by all accounts it’s a phenomenon though that’s kind of stopped me seeing it. Hype does that sometimes. So ok. This time. It’s got a more 5 stars and awards than any thing else in the festival and doesnt even mention it. – Tobias

SUCCESS (scratch showing)
Here’s the opposite end of the spectrum. A show that doesn’t even exist. What’s a fringe festival if you’re not taking punts? Any show that openly comes out and says it is anti-capitalist is either wild and brave or completely undergraduate and in this setting I’m excited for either. – Tobias
A hoot? – Tobias

HYSTERICAL
Disclaimer: My show at VAULT last year was a co-pro with some of these guys. So I have no idea what to expect but so actually Tom you tell us… – Tobias
Expect darkness, challenging mime, hilarity, and complex themes. I like some of these things. Themes! – Tom

GREYWING HOUSE
Yes. I am so goth. And this show is so goth. Our shows should have sad goth children together and cry our makeup everywhere. I am so there and so depressed. Also singing. – Tobias
I’m not a goth, but I did meet one once. And he highly recommends this show. So. – Tom

CRUDE PROSPECTS
So this is another one I can’t really comment about as I worked with them in VAULT 2015. Still we won an award. And now here we both are making shows about the Arctic which is pretty weird. – Tobias
It’s really weird. Let’s do another blog post about all the arctic and bear related shows. And see this. If they worked with you they need all the help they can get Tobias. – Tom
Forge | 6pm | 17-21 Feb | £12
